They were what Georg had feared: raiders, bloodthirsty highwaymen of the worst sort. They stopped and tore apart Georg's house, looking for valuables but finding none (as he had buried his fortune some way away from the house that morning). Georg left them to their distraction and headed for the village as fast as he dared. When he arrived, the townsfolk were alarmed to see him in battle gear. He told them what was coming and to go to their houses and lock the doors, to keep the women and children safe and all listened except the schoolteacher.
